Why I love Russian literature

I have always been a fan of Russian literature. Why? One reason was I had always felt alone growing up.

I felt like an outcast, like a ‘Gypsies on the edge of an alien world, a world that is as deaf to my music as to my sorrows’. I think many people as teens feel like this. I felt the world was a cold place and I was living on its edge.

In addition to this, I never thought I would find love in my life. I only saw a life suffering and hardship, for various reasons. I struggled with issues of God and morality.

Enter Russian literature

Enter Russian literature. Russian stories are not like English adventure stories or American exploration stories or modern fiction dealing with women exploring their freedom in sensual ways. Rather Russian literature is about toiling, suffering and lament.

Russian writers, at least Russian classic writers were searching for meaning and sense in this life. They were living in a crazy country which was literally at the edge of the world.

In Russian stories love if it comes, is deep and is largely about someone who understands your suffering.

Russian literature and love

Russian literature and love

This is why I love Russian literature

I feel it cuts though the nonsense and speaks honestly about how hard life is. However, even i this hardness through love faith and redemption are possible.
